What’s Your Strength?

Fall semester has started, and I’m excited to have Bruce Hetrick, former local PR agency owner (and public relations guru) as my instructor for my Campaigns class. This class is the last class in a series of public relations campaign classes, and is where we’ll put our valuable PR research and planning knowledge into action.
I love the class so far. Because it’s so relatively unstructured, it feels more like a real PR agency than a public relations course (which is refreshing). Last week, Bruce had us take the Clifton StrengthsFinder 2.0 quiz, and then each person with those strengths stood and explained what their strengths are and how it could be applied to business.
It was an interesting exercise. How often does someone take a cold, hard look at how they operate in a business setting? For some questions, I had strong opinions. For others, I had no idea how to answer. All made me reflect on how I interact with others, and how I can put my skills to use.
I was one of two in the class who had a theme of “Adaptability,” and one of few who had “Developer” as a theme. From what I’ve read, I would agree that my Top 5 Themes describe some of my strengths. I’d encourage everyone to buy the book and take the quiz! Here are my Top 5 Strengths, according to the Clifton StrengthsFinder quiz:
1. Empathy

People who are especially talented in the Empathy theme can sense the feelings of other people by imagining themselves in others’ lives or others’ situations.

2. Input

People who are especially talented in the Input theme have a craving to know more. Often they like to collect and archive all kinds of information.

3. Harmony

People who are especially talented in the Harmony theme look for consensus. They don’t enjoy conflict; rather, they seek areas of agreement.

4. Developer

People who are especially talented in the Developer theme recognize and cultivate the potential in others. They spot the signs of each small improvement and derive satisfaction from these improvements.

5. Adaptability

People who are especially talented in the Adaptability theme prefer to “go with the flow.” They tend to be “now” people who take things as they come and discover the future one day at a time.

    I like this concept. Have you also heard of Emotional Intelligence concept? There are 15 subcomponents there that reflect and complete those you listed above:
